For our next meeting, we'll be reading The Mathematician’s Shiva by Stuart Rojstaczer. The novel tells the story of a Russian Jewish family of eminent mathematicians who immigrate to the U.S. The matriarch of the family is a mathematical genius who solves a seemingly insolvable math problem, and on her death, a mob of Eastern European Jewish mathematicians assemble at her shiva to try to discover the solution that they believe she has hidden. It’s a laugh-out-loud yet poignant family saga.

The book, which won the 2024 National Jewish Book Award for Outstanding Debut Fiction is not only available on Amazon, but in libraries as well.

As many of you may know, several of our members have personal stories about their own immigration from the former Soviet Union, and we expect that they will participate in our book club session to comment upon the protagonists’ journey—and their own.
