WHAT IS THIS DOCUMENT?
Jewish law prohibits owning or benefiting from Chametz (leavened products) during Passover. Rather than disposing of all Chametz, Jewish tradition permits selling it to a non-Jew for the duration of the holiday.
This form authorizes Rabbi Zolty to act as your agent in selling your Chametz before Passover, as required by Jewish law. The sale is a legally binding transaction under both secular and Jewish law.
HOW DOES THE SALE WORK?
1. You appoint Rabbi Zolty as your agent through this form
2. Rabbi Zolty sells all designated Chametz to a non-Jewish buyer before Passover
3. The sale takes effect at 11:39 AM on Friday, April 11th, 2025
4. The sale excludes any Chametz you plan to eat between Friday and Saturday morning
5. Any unconsumed Chametz as of Saturday at 11:39 AM is retroactively included in the sale
6. After Passover ends, Rabbi Zolty arranges for the Chametz to be sold back to you.
7. An email confirmation will be sent when your Chametz has been reacquired after Pesach (approximately 9:15 PM ET Sunday, April 20th).
SPECIAL NOTE ABOUT THIS YEAR (2025)
Because Passover begins on a Saturday night and sales are not permitted on Shabbat, the sale of Chametz takes place on the previous Friday morning. However, unlike other years, one is allowed to consume and own Chametz through Shabbat morning:
-
The latest time for eating Chametz on Shabbat (Sat April 12th) in NYC is 10:45 AM
-
The latest time for owning Chametz on Shabbat in NYC is 11:39 AM
-
The Kol Chamira declaration (nullification of Chametz) should be recited in NYC by 11:39 AM on Shabbat
A special provision in this form accounts for Chametz that will be consumed between Friday's sale and Saturday's deadline, while ensuring that any Chametz not consumed by the Saturday deadline is retroactively included in Friday's sale in accordance with Jewish law.
HOW TO SUBMIT THIS FORM
Rabbi Zolty will be available in the shul office for the sale at the following times:
