"Deciding Vote" (2023) AND Here We Are (2020)
We will begin the evening's program with an exclusive screening of a
short, "Deciding Vote" (2023; 30 minutes), produced by Doron and
Sherry Steger, parents of our own Elana Fishman and Daniella
Steinberg. The film, which tells the amazing story of New York State
assemblyman George Michaels and his courageous tie-breaking vote
legalizing abortion before Roe v. Wade--a vote that destroyed his
political career but changed the course of American history, has
already garnered four awards and an Oscar nomination prediction by
Variety. We are delighted that producers Doron and Sherry Steger will
be on hand following the screening for a brief Q&A.
And for our main feature, we will be showing Here We Are (2020; 90
minutes), a moving Israeli drama that explores the intense
relationship between a devoted father, Aharon, and his autistic son,
Uri, as the decision to send Uri to a special boarding school looms.
Mixing gentle humour with quiet moments of tenderness, this
beautifully rendered film from acclaimed Israeli director Nir Bergman
is a bittersweet and life-affirming story about fatherly love and the
difficulty of letting go.
In light of these changes, we will be starting at 7:30. Note the
change in time, because you definitely don't want to miss out!

"Jellyfish" (2007)
Directed by Etgar Keret and Shira Geffen, this artistically shot film offers a compassionate, at times whimsical, and ultimately uplifting look at ordinary life. Focusing on the serendipitously intersecting lives of three women in Tel Aviv, it explores loneliness, the tenderness and fragility of human relationships, and the small kindnesses that can offset the dreariness of modern existence. Winner of the 2007 Camera d'Or at the Cannes Film Festival.

The Samaritans: A Biblical People (2022)
On Mt. Gerizim, a community of 850 Samaritans struggles to preserve its 3,500-year-old biblical heritage.
Award-winning documentarian Moshe Alafi explores the challenges, external and internal, that
imperil the Samaritans’ survival along with the determined efforts to maintain their Torah, their unique customs, and the sacred mountain at the heart of their identity.
78 minutes; Hebrew with English subtitles
